F Do An ancient poet has remarked that good men avoid sin ] from a love of virtue while evil men avoid sin from a fear of punishment. Psychologists who study moral develop- ment tell us that the early stages of moral development are largely about avoiding punishment, but that as chil- dren grow older they usually develop an appreciation for virtue and moral principles. If you do the right thing only because you fear being punished if you don't, you are at best acting like a child, and at worst, morally depraved. If you do the ri thing because you have a sincere love of virtue, then you have achieved ai higher stage of moral development. On the spiritual plane, the difference is between someone who does what is good out of sheer adherence to moral or religious precepts, acting primarily from a fear of hellfire, damnation, or similar punishment, rather than from a love of God and his fellow man. We should cultivate first and foremost a love of God, and secondly a love of our fellow man. The rest will fall naturally into place. -" .VTtll the aw and the Prophers hana on ese two comnandr%nrs. 4ahew 22: 37-4o These weekly church announcements and messages are sponsored by the following concerned and responsible citizens and area businesses.
